STINK BUGS AND STINK BUG TRAPS!
- TOPIC: Stink Bugs.
- ORIGIN: Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea.
- HABITAT: Northeast region of the United States.
WHAT ARE STINK BUGS? Grayish/Tan in color, legs, antenna and winged. Looks like a tiny flying
saucer.
HEALTH THREAT:
None known. More of a nuisance, but they do cause
some problems with farmers of apples, peaches, figs, mulberries, citrus fruits,
corn, tomatoes, green peppers, persimmons as well as ornamental plants, weeds,
soybeans and beans.
WHAT IS THE SMELL? Stink bugs secrete a bad-smelling, bad-tasting fluid from pores on the sides of their bodies. This fluid / smell to us (and their presence) is the nuisance; however, to the stink bug it’s their protection from predators.
WHY ARE THEY MORE PREVALENT IN THE FALL? Like other small insects and animals, they head to the interior of our
homes looking for protection from adverse weather conditions.
WHY ARE THEY ATTRACTED TO THE INTERIOR? They're attracted to light and moisture.

TIPS:
Try to prevent them from coming into your home.
1) Seal around doors, windows and other small
openings around the foundation.
2) If you open your windows for fresh air, be sure
screens are in place and tight in their respective frames.
3) Try mixing a small amount of dish-washing soap
with water (in a small spray container, one part soap and ten
parts water). Then mist around the exterior of door and window frames,
thresholds and screens.
4) If you find a Stink bug (or several) your first
instinct is to squish them, DON'T. If you do they will release that
bad-smelling fluid/odor. Here’s what I do; catch it, fold it up in tissue paper then
put it in a zip lock bag (I keep my zip lock bag in with my trash). Throw the bag away with your trash weekly.
